Aromatherapy Cautions

Aromatherapy essential oils are absolutely safe when used correctly. The cautions noted on this page are given to assist you with your education of essential oil use.

Aromatherapy essential oils should not be applied "neat" or directly on the skin. Essential oils should be applied with a carrier oil or massage lotion. Dilution may be 3 – 4 drops of essential oil to equal portions carrier oil. For massage, you may want to mix 10 – 12 drops of essential oil in 25 ml Mixing oil or Massage lotion. You should use less essential oil in combination with a carrier when application is being made to a child. We recommend consulting a health care practitioner before applying essential oils to an infant younger than 12 weeks of age.

  • Never put essential oils into the eyes or ears. If you accidentally do, use Mixing Oil to dilute. DO NOT rinse with water. Oil and water do not mix. Using water will push oil deeper into sensitive tissues.
  • We do not recommend using aromatherapy essential oils internally.
  • Some essential oils cause the skin to become photosensitive. Do not expose your skin to sunlight when using citrus oils, for instance.
  • Consult your health care practitioner before using aromatherapy essential oils during pregnancy.
  • People with high blood pressure (hypertension) should avoid using Hyssop, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme.
  • Fennel, Hyssop, Rosemary and all types of Sage oils should be avoided if you have epilepsy.
  • Keep essential oils tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Keep essential oils out of sunlight and extreme cold.
  • If you experience redness, burning, itching or irritation while using essential oils, dilute them with mixing oil or massage lotion.
  • Essential oils are flammable under certain conditions. Do not drop essential oils on top of burning candles or place essential oils near an open flame.
