Question: (What is Aromatherapy?)

What is Aromatherapy?

Answer:

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils extracted from plants, herbs, barks and peels to promote health and well being and improve quality of life. The body becomes more balanced through the use of essential oils. Aromatherapy is a natural part of life, though you may not have attached a name to the experience. Everyone has emotional and psychological responses to scent.

Question: (What are Essential Oils?)

What are Essential Oils?

Answer:

Essential oils are the life force of plants. When you crush the petal of a rose or tear the leaf from a peppermint plant, a liquid substance emerges. These tiny drops of liquid are called essential oils. Citrus oils are pressed from the peels or rinds of the fruit. Ancient civilizations understood many of the aromatic and therapeutic uses of oils and resins. The modern world is barely beginning to comprehend the value of these hidden treasures.

Question: (Responses to Essential Oils)

How will I respond to Essential Oils?

Answer:

Only your body knows how you will respond to an essential oil. If you are a first time-user or have fair skin, you may want to consult your health care practitioner. Avoid using any type of essential oil on a baby's skin. Some people are sensitive, so oils applied directly to their skin might lead to the development of a rash when first used. Other people have been known to experience "detoxification", or the releasing of stored toxins from the body (accompanied by flu-like symptoms, such as a slight headache) when using the oils for the first time. Many people experience no unusual sensations at all when using these oils. Everyone is different.

Question: (Value of Essential Oils)

What is the real value of Essential Oils?

Answer:

We like to think of essential oils as nature's pharmacy. Essential oils may be used as mood creators, perfumes and fragrances. Natural scents keep you connected to the world around you by rekindling emotions and feelings. Essential oils may also have therapeutic value.

Question: (Physical properties of Essential Oils)

What are the physical properties of Essential Oils?

Answer:

Essential oils are highly concentrated, volatile (evaporate quickly) plant extracts that contain hundreds of organic constituents and other natural elements. Essential oils carry the beneficial properties of the plants they were derived from and provide a natural form of herbal energy. Most essential oils are lighter than water and yet are not water soluble, and they are able to dissolve in body fats.

Question: (Pure oil)

What is a "pure" oil?

Answer:

A pure essential oil is one that does not contain added chemicals or additives of any kind, including vegetable oils. A pure essential oil has nothing added to it. However, a pure oil does not necessarily have a high therapeutic value. In fact, the therapeutic benefits of a pure oil can be very low. This can be somewhat astonishing when you first begin to understand aromatherapy. What you are looking for is a pure essential oil that has the highest therapeutic content. Only a GLC test and a proper reading can determine the therapeutic quality of an essential oil. Our essential oils are pure essential oils released during the first distillation. After distillation, they are not chemically altered or changed by additives. Products used on the body should be void of harmful chemicals. While many companies sell perfumed oils, or even oils that are commercial grade, the essential oils you receive from us will always be of the highest quality. You cannot find essential oils of a higher therapeutic content.

Question: (Folded oils)

What are "folded" oils?

Answer:

The term folded refers to oils that have been redistilled several times to remove constituents, with the aim of changing the scent of the oil for use in the food and drug industry. However, therapeutic qualities are important, and folded oils are unsuitable for use in aromatherapy. We do not distribute oils that have been folded. We guarantee our essential oils are single-specie, therapeutic-quality oils that have been distilled at proper temperatures and are 100-percent pure.

Question: (How essential oils work)

How do essential oils work?

Answer:

The therapeutic potential of essential oils has yet to be fully understood. Ongoing scientific research is needed. We do know that essential oils can benefit systems of the body and affect each one differently. Essential oils work on the emotional level, the energetic level, and the physiological level. They are all interconnected. Essential oils affect the mind, body, and spirit and provide a holistic approach to supporting the body. Aromatherapy is much more than merely a reaction to an aroma or scent. Essential oils have three modes of action:

Psychological - Imagine that you have gone back in time to your early childhood home. Close your eyes and picture walking through the door. Chances are, in addition to familiar objects, certain smells will also spark your memory - your mother's perfume, the smell of baking cookies - essential oils have a remarkable ability to influence your psyche by evoking moods and memories.

Pharmacological - Chemical changes take place as the body reacts to the application of essential oils. European doctors who study phytotherapy (the study of the whole plant) are trained to use herbs and essential oils internally to supplement the body's health systems. Essential oils have a remarkable ability to work in harmony with the body in maintaining overall good health.

Physiological - Essential oils applied externally take physiological action. The action is more subtle than oral application and less likely to cause undesired effects. For example, rosemary and peppermint stimulate, while Roman Chamomile and Lavender sedate. Rosemary is a hypertensor (supports energy boosting), while Geranium is a hypotensor (assists in relaxation). Essential oils should never be used internally without qualified medical advice. For people with abnormalities within their body systems, ingestion of an essential oil that has a direct action on the affected system could cause their conditions to worsen.

Question: (Linalool)

What is Linalool?

Answer:

Linalool is found naturally in many oils. It is the substance that creates the sweet smell. Some companies add natural or synthetic linalool to low-quality oils to create a sweet smell. We maintain the integrity of the oils just as they are removed from the still.

Question: (UV protected bottles)

Are your essential oil bottles UV protected?

Answer:

Yes. Our bottles are soda/lime with quartz sand mixed in. This type of bottle, no matter what the color, even if the bottle is clear, provides excellent UV protection. Many people have been told that only amber-colored bottles are UV protected, or that they offer the highest level of UV protection. According to a major glass scientist, this information is incorrect. Our essential oil bottles provide a UV protection of 85 percent.

Question: (Complementary medicine)

Are essential oils on the fringe of complementary medicine?

Answer:

Really the opposite is true. Essential oils have been in existence since the very first plant, tree, fruit and shrub existed. This makes them the oldest form of herbal therapy. Ancient cultures used these oils and resins in a wide variety of ways. While essential oils are relatively new to America, countries such as Russia, England, France, India and the Ukraine do not consider aromatherapy or the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes new, unusual, or fringe. They consider it essential! In fact, essential oils are sometimes used by pharmaceutical companies who extract "active" ingredients to produce medications.

Question: (How to use)

How do I know where to apply the oils and which carrier to use?

Answer:

There are no hard and fast rules of application, either with the amount of oil or on what areas of the body to use them. Some people prefer to mix the oils with our mixing oil, while others choose the massage lotion. If you want the oils to remain on the skin's surface longer, use the mixing oil. If you want a more direct application that is absorbed into the skin faster, then use massage lotion.

Question: (Take internally)

Can essential oils be taken internally?

Answer:

We do not give instructions for internal consumption of essential oils or recommend that you use them internally. In some European countries, medical doctors are trained to work with essential oils internally. The oils are obtained by prescription through a local pharmacy.

Question: (Grade A oils)

What are Grade "A" oils?

Answer:

The term Grade A is a USDA designation that applies to eggs, butter, cheese, and meat. It is not a grading system for essential oils in the United States. In France, regulatory grading measures safeguard the quality of essential oils staying within that country. Other countries have similar regulations to protect consumers. Our essential oils meet or exceed all of the individual country guidelines throughout the world.

Question: (How will I respond?)

How will I respond to essential oils?

Answer:

Only your body knows how you will respond to essential oils. Some people are sensitive. If you are a first time user, have fair skin or are using the oils with babies and children, take precautions. Dilute the oils using a carrier such as our Mixing Oil or Massage Lotion. For more information see the article, Aromatherapy Contra-Indications Chart on this web site. In random cases, essential oils applied directly to the skin may result in a rash. Some people may seem to experience a detoxification or flu-like symptoms when using the oils for the first time. Detoxification is the releasing of stored toxins from the body. People who have experienced difficulties using essential oils in the past may have been applying oils that were adulterated by either synthetic or natural means. Pure, raw, natural, therapeutic essential oils rarely cause problems when used correctly.
