Essential Oil of Benzoin (Styrax benzoin/tonkinesis) Abbr: Ben [to top of page] This large tropical tree grows up to 20m tall with pale green citrus-like leaves, that are whitish underneath. It releases a balsamic resin when the trunk is cut. The resin hardens on exposure to air. Note: Base. Odour of Essential Oil of Benzoin: Rich, sweet, vanilla-like. Colour of Essential Oil of Benzoin: Orange to reddish brown. Source of Essential Oil of Benzoin: Resin. Method of Extraction of Benzoin: An incision is made in the trunk and crude benzoin exudes. The absolute is prepared from the resin using solvents and alcohol, which are then removed. Properties of Essential Oil of Benzoin: Antibacterial, Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, Antiseptic, Astringent, Carminative, Deodorant, Diuretic, Expectorant, Sedative, Vulnerary. Actions of Essential Oil of Benzoin: Anti-depressant. Circulatory: Circulation - sluggish, gout, rheumatism. Genito-Urinary: Cystitis, fluid retention, urethritis. Immune: Laryngitis. Lymphatic: Inflammation, water retention. Muscular: Aches and pains. Nervous: Anxiety, depression, exhaustion, stress related problems. Respiratory: Asthma, bronchitis, cough, respiratory problems. Skeletal: Arthritis, rheumatism. Skin: Chilblains, skin - dry, skin irritations, wounds. Medical Terms: Arthritis, bronchitis, cystitis, spermatorrhea, urethritis. Mental/Emotional Symptoms: Anxiety, depression, exhaustion, tension. Cautions for Essential Oil of Benzoin: May irritate sensitive skin. Comments on Benzoin: Benzoin is native to tropical Aisa.~It is not a true essential oil, but is a resin that must be melted by heating over hot water before it can be used. ~Commercially, Benzoin is diluted - preferably in wood alcohol.~The lovely vanilla scent makes Benzoin a nice choice for blending in air fresheners and astrigents/aftershaves.
