Essential Oil of Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) Abbr: G/R [to top of page] A perennial plant with single, woody stems that grows to a height of 3 - 7 ft. Yellow flowers about 1/4 inch wide grow in clusters, leaves alternate between toothed and smooth. Note: Top. Odour of Essential Oil of Goldenrod: Fresh and herbaceous with a hint of floral. Source of Essential Oil of Goldenrod: Flowering herb. Method of Extraction of Goldenrod: Steam distillation. Properties of Essential Oil of Goldenrod: Antibacterial, Anticatarrh, Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Diuretic, Hepatic, Hypotensive. Actions of Essential Oil of Goldenrod: Balances CNS, calming. Circulatory: Edema, fluid retention, gout, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, rheumatism. Digestion: Liver problems. Genito-Urinary: Bladder inflammation, fluid retention, menses - heavy. Lymphatic: Lymph congestion, water retention. Muscular: Aches and pains. Nervous: Anxiety, balances CNS, nervousness. Respiratory: Asthma, congestion, hay fever, sinus infection, tuberculosis, whooping cough. Skeletal: Joint inflammations, rheumatism. Skin: Acne, allergies, eczema, insect bites, scrapes, skin infection, wounds. Mental/Emotional Symptoms: Anxiety, balances, calming. Contra-Indications for Goldenrod: Pregnancy. Babies and small children. May cause skin irritation. Comments on Goldenrod: Native to Europe, this plant is also grown in Canada.~Primary use for Goldenrod is treating water retention problems.~Goldenrod is actually considered to be an aquaretic, which means it promotes the loss of water from the body but not the loss of salts and electrolytes (as with a diuretic).~Goldenrod teas are used for flushing kidney stones and for urinary tract inflammations, and Goldenrod is also used in combination with Echinacea to fight infection.
