Essential Oil of Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans or M. officinalis or M. aromata) Abbr: N/M [to top of page] An evergreen tree up to 20 metres tall. It has greyish-brown smooth bark, dense foliage and small dull-yellow flowers. Note: Base. Odour of Essential Oil of Nutmeg: Sweet, warm-spicy scent with a terpeney top note. Fresh, spicy-warm balsamic scent. Colour of Essential Oil of Nutmeg: Water-white or pale yellow. Orange-brown. Source of Essential Oil of Nutmeg: Seed. Method of Extraction of Nutmeg: Distillation. Properties of Essential Oil of Nutmeg: Analgesic, Antibacterial, Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Astringent, Cardiac, Carminative, Cephalic, Digestive, Diuretic, Emmenagogic, Febrifuge, Hypertensive, Nervine, Sedative, Sudorific, Uterine, Vermifuge, Vulnerary. Actions of Essential Oil of Nutmeg: Calming, tonic - general, uterine tonic. Circulatory: Circulation problems, edema, fluid retention, gout, rheumatism. Digestion: Appetite - lack, diarrhea - chronic, digestion - sluggish, flatulence, halitosis, indigestion, intestinal infection, intestinal parasites, toothache. Genito-Urinary: Fluid retention, menstrual pain, scanty periods. Immune: Infections - general. Lymphatic: Water retention. Muscular: Aches and pains, backache, cramps, muscle pain, muscle spasms, sprains, strains. Nervous: Fatigue, impotence, neuralgia. Reproduction: Frigidity, impotence. Skeletal: Arthritis, joint pain, rheumatism. Medical Terms: Arthritis, neuralgia. Mental/Emotional Symptoms: Fatigue, frigidity, impotence. Cautions for Essential Oil of Nutmeg: It is recommended that this oil be avoided unless under the strict advice of a professional. Contra-Indications for Nutmeg: Pregnancy. Cardiac disease. Children under 5 years of age. May irritate sensitive skin. May be stupefying in large doses, causing numbness, convulsions, delirium, psychotropic effects or mental discomfort including hallucinations. Comments on Nutmeg: Nutmeg is native to Moluccas and nearby islands, and is cultivated in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.~Nutmeg is a very powerful oil, and very useful in a host of conditions.~However, extreme caution must be taken when using Nutmeg and it should NEVER be used on pregnant women, children or the seriously infirm.~There have been reports that this oil is helpful in the treatment of endometriosis.
