Bee Pollen: Good Nutrition

Bee pollen is the fine powder in the male seed of a flower blossom. Bees transport it and mix it with nectar for their own nourishment. The pollen grains are collected and eaten by the bees, but also pollinate flowers. Bee pollen and honey have been recognized since ancient times for their healing benefits. Egyptian records dating back thousands of years have references to honey and its healing potential. Ancient Greek marathon runners recognized the value of bee pollen and used it to increase their strength and endurance. European nations, as well as the Asian countries, also revere bee pollen for its medicinal value.

Bee pollen is considered a complete food because it contains every chemical substance needed to maintain life. It is a great supplement to build the immune system and provide energy to the body. It is thought to have the ability to correct body chemistry and eliminate unhealthy conditions. It is recommended for premature aging, chronic fatigue, prostatitis, low or high blood pressure, indigestion, menopause, allergies, asthma, infertility and as an immune system enhancer. It can also help to improve concentration and mental function, reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels and normalize weight by balancing body chemistry. Athletes often use this supplement to help increase their strength, endurance, and speed. It is also used to treat hay fevers, allergies and asthma.

The Institute of Bee Culture, Bures Sur Yvete, in Paris and other scientists throughout Europe studied the effects of honeybee pollen consumption on human beings. They found exceptional antibiotic properties in bee pollen. They also determined that bee pollen is helpful in treating conditions such as fatigue, allergies, bronchitis, sinusitis, colds, balancing the endocrine system, menstrual problems, prostate problems, constipation, colitis, anemia, depression and hair loss!

Bee pollen is one of the world's oldest youth foods. It is now being recognized by scientists throughout the world as a substance that can help promote youthful feeling, build resistance to ailments, help boost healing powers and provide dynamic energy. The scientific discovery of the youth building powers of bee pollen in the current century was made some three decays ago by Russian biologist and experimental botanist, Nicolai Tsitsin.

When Professor Nicolai Vasilievich Tsitsin, a biologist and experimental botanist associated with the Longevity Institute of the USSR, did a study of centenarians in the Caucasus mountains of the Russian province of Georgia, he was looking for the common bond that had many Georgians living past 100 years and some reaching as much as 150 years old. Dr. Tsitsin discovered that these oldsters were mostly beekeepers with products from the beehive being their principal food. They kept the raw, unprocessed honey for themselves and sold off the clear "pure" honey.

Knowingly or not, they were incorporating one of nature's richest and most nutritionally packed foods into their own diet. It's a food Russia routinely includes as nourishment for that country's competitive international athletes.

Pollen is known to contain 16 different vitamins, including B12, 16 minerals, 21 enzymes and co-enzymes, all 18 amino acids and many other elements not yet fully investigated. The protein content of pollen varies from 15% - 35% depending on floral sources. Pollen comes in all colours and taste varieties like herbs, from bitter to sweet, but all pollens are nutritionally valuable. It is the richest food in the smallest volume since it contains, when properly dried, only 4% moisture. One pound of pollen is comparable in its nutritional value to about 15 pounds of fresh vegetables, salads and fruits or, in regard to its proteins, to about 5 pounds of beef. In other words, 32 grams or 2 level tablespoons of pollen has all the personal daily requirements of essential proteins. This is especially interesting to people on a vegetarian diet. Bee pollen is a pure, unprocessed substance of 100% plant origin, produced by the flowers of herbs, plants and trees and collected by honeybees, with no man-made additives or preservatives. One of nature's greatest gifts to mankind.

Many American athletes and Olympic competitors depend on honeybee pollen. Mohammed Ali, former heavyweight boxing champion, popped down pellets during all the years he was actively defending his title. Steve Riddick, US gold medalist in the 1976 Olympics, drank bee pollen in milkshakes and vegetable juice. Honeybee pollen has the potential to contribute as a major food source for humans; it is a nutritionally complete food with no side effects.

After the 1972 Olympics at Munich it was revealed that Finland's Lasse Viren, winner of the 5,000 metre and 10,000 metre track event, had been eating honeybee pollen regularly for years. Between training and competition, every day he swallows four to ten capsules of pollen. Now every member of the Finnish team takes honeybee pollen regularly. They sprinkle it on their morning cereal, add it to tall glasses of freshly squeezed fruit juice, pop it into their mouths as bee pollen pellets, spread it as a honey paste on whole grain bread, or take it in tablet form along with their daily quota of vitamins and minerals.

Royal Jelly for Youthfulness

Royal Jelly is a viscid, pearly white, cohesive substance. It is formed by nursing bees that mix masticated pollen with their own glandular enzyme. The queen bee receives Royal Jelly throughout her life span of up to eight years. She rules the hive and may lay as many as a quarter of a million eggs in each season. Worker bees on the other hand do not receive Royal Jelly (except for the first three days of their lives) and live only two to six months.

Bees seem to choose their future queen in advance by constructing some of the cells of the honeycomb inside the hive slightly larger than the rest. However, the egg from which the queen bee hatches is identical to the others. This fact has led researchers to the stunning conclusion that the great difference in size and longevity is attributable only to nutrition. Evidently, Royal Jelly contains some very potent substances, which are directly responsible for the queen bees' remarkable vitality.

The principal nutrient in Royal Jelly is vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid). It contains up to six times the amount found in brewer's yeast and liver. Pantothenic acid has been able to increase the life span of laboratory animals by over 20% while at the same time inducing increased stamina and endurance. Human muscle contains twice as much B5 as the muscle of other animals. Pantothenic acid is an antioxidant, a substance that prevents the abnormal oxidation of cells by destructive chemicals known as free radicals. Free radicals are produced by consuming rancid unsaturated oils, drinking chlorinated water, smoking, inhaling carbon monoxide, exposure to radiation, consuming chemical food additives, and bowel irregularities that release toxic gasses into the bloodstream. In other words, everyday life in the inductrialized world. The presence of B5 is necessary to convert choline into the neuro-transmitter acetylcholine, which involves memory, mental focus and reproduction. Pantothenic acid is also the catalyst for the production and release of the indispensable adrenal hormones. Common B5 deficiency symptoms are adrenal exhaustion, hypoglycemia, fatigue, irritability, hair loss, disorders of the nervous system, skin problems and premature aging.

Gelatin, another component of Royal Jelly, is one of the primary precursors of collagen, a potent anti-aging compound that helps to keep the skin youthful while supporting the organs, glands and muscular systems. It contains vital fatty acids, sugars, sterols, phosphorus compounds and acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is essential for the proper transmission of nerve impulses and the proper functioning of the endocrine system. A lack of acetylcholine leads to a susceptibility to a number of nerve disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.

Royal Jelly contains the following properties: antibacterial, antiviral, antibiotic, tonic, nutritive, anti-aging. It is beneficial to the following body systems: immune, cardiovascular, endocrine, integumentary (skin), nervous, reproductive, cellular, skeletal, hepatic (liver) and respiratory.

Aging is inevitable, but the process can be significantly slowed with supplements. Researchers in Argentina have been working scientifically to document the ability of Royal Jelly to not only slow down tissue deterioration, but to reverse it. Consider Noel Johnson's story, who experienced a rebirth of health at age 80. In 1964 at age 65, he was refused life insurance due to a weak and damaged heart and was cautioned to dramatically restrict his physical activity or death could occur. He said, "I stripped down and looked in the mirror. All the classic signs of aging were there. I was 40 pounds overweight, with a bulging gut, dull eyes, slack unused muscles. I looked defeated. I knew I was doing everything wrong so I decided to teach myself to live right."

In 1989, at age ninety, Johnson wrote the book called The Living Proof: I have Found the Fountain of Youth where he claimed that his use of bee products in addition to a solid nutritional program changed his life. "I have made the products of the beehive the solid foundation of my nutritional program. Although I eat a large variety of whole foods, bee products are an unvarying part of my diet." Since first beginning marathon running in the 1970's, his credits include many marathon medals in the Senior Division and the title of the World's Senior Boxing Champion.

Royal Jelly contains between 18 and 22 amino acids, including all the essential ones, depending on the source of the pollen. Nucleic acids are also present, which determine the rebuilding process of each cell. Science has determined that the regular ingestion of DNA-RNA substances has special rejuvenating and restorative effects on internal glands, organs, memory and thought clarity. Excessive aging, senility, wrinkling, adrenal gland dysfunction and organ atrophy are conditions related to nucleic acid deficiency. Also found in Royal Jelly are growth hormones (auxin) and plant hormones (phytosterol), which play an important role in spermatogenesis.

Royal Jelly contains the "Intrinsic Factor," a co-protein necessary to absorb B12, which is required for red blood cell formation and synthesis of DNA-RNA. Royal Jelly is also a good source of B complex, the single most important group of nutrients for the health of the nerves. With its antibiotic properties, Royal Jelly acts as a powerful bacteriostatic and increases cellular defenses against infection.

Royal Jelly contains every essential nutrient necessary to support human life. Some of its greatest values stem from the synergistic action of all its known elements working together. The composition of Royal Jelly is extremely complex. The most basic weapons in the fight against disease are the numerous nutrients that the cells of our bodies need. Food must not only supply our fuel, but also daily required amounts of all the nutrients in quality and balance. Because Royal Jelly is so reliable, it can be used strictly for its preventative insurance benefits or as a medicine for those who suffer from injury, stress or illness. Its concentration of precious and stable elements makes it a super supplement of high biological value, unique in all the plant and animal kingdom. Capsulation ensures preservation, quality and convenience for the consumer.

Bee Propolis for the Immune System

When bees started to gather in hives some 50 million years ago, they had a problem; the same problem that no doctor likes to face. How do you avoid bacterial infection when 50,000 bodies are crawling over one another night and day?

Nature provided the ideal answer for bees. Certain trees such as poplar, willow, horse chestnut and birch, exude a sap, which has antibiotic qualities to protect that tree from infection. Bees gather this sap, remetabolize it with their own nectar secretions and take it back to the hive. They put this substance all over the hive so every bee can brush against it and become immunized.

Many scientists believe a hive to be more sterile and free from bacteria than a modern hospital. The tree antibiotic became a bee antibiotic and was hence named propolis by the ancient Greeks, which means 'before the city' or 'a defense.' For centuries Propolis remained part of folk medicine, mainly in Europe and Russia.

Some 20 years ago it was rediscovered by a Danish scientist, K. Lung Aagaard and a French doctor Remy Chauvin. They worked specifically to standardize the quality of this natural product. Today, hospitals, clinics and universities in many parts of Europe are testing Propolis for the treatment of many illnesses and for conditions of immunity. One report alone, just translated by two American doctors, reveals the successful use of Propolis in Russia in more than 70 different studies during the past 17 years. Currently Propolis has proven effective in helping to build immunity and resistance to such conditions as infections, ulcers, colds, stress, periodontal problems, pharyngitis and aging itself.

The most recent report is that Propolis is being considered by the World Health Organization as part of its nutritional and health program. Thus far, nearly all research on Propolis has taken place in Europe. To help protect against the 'aging clock' and the interference with your genetic blueprint, it is necessary to rebuild and strengthen your immune system. Cultures all over the world have recognized the ability of Propolis to fight infection, to promote healing and to support immune function. The widespread use of Propolis in the Soviet Union for infection earned it the appropriate title "Russian penicillin".

In the first double blind, placebo controlled study of this food, Professor S. Scheller, heading a team of four other doctors at the Institute for Microbiology at the Medical Academy in Sabrze-Rokitinca, Poland, found that Propolis did have the power to prolong the prime of life. Professor Scheller's research published recently, in part concluded that Propolis is able to directly stimulate the immune system to release substances that protect against cellular deterioration, promote a process of phagocylosis, the destruction of potentially harmful foreign bacteria that is otherwise threatening within the body and stimulate the formation of antibodies to build immunity to many diseases. "Stimulate the immune system," says Professor S. Scheller, "and it is possible to control the aging process and enjoy a long and healthy life. Propolis holds the key to this form of inner rejuvenation."

Professor Scheller's findings offer hope for extending the prime of life by building resistance to aging and many illnesses through the use of Propolis to strengthen the cellular defenses.

Basically phagocytes (white blood cells) serve as the body's primary defense mechanism against bacterial infections. You need an abundance of healthy phagocytes because they engulf harmful bacteria and secrete a variety of substances that digest the invading microbe once it is engulfed. These same phagocytes are responsible for influencing the production of antibodies to knock out harmful bacteria. Professor Scheller found that Propolis initiates the activity and cleansing action of these life-saving white blood cells.

Our immune system is vital, of course, because it helps protect us against diseases and infections. Not as well known however, is that as you reach your thirties the immune system weakens. As it grows weaker in succeeding years, you become susceptible to many illnesses. When there is a weakening of any immune mechanism it is necessary to have a natural supplement that offers the widest possible spectrum of nutritional enhancement. Such a supplement must have a wide range of flavanoids or cell-building compounds.

Propolis not only contains a complex of vitamins, minerals and enzymes, it also has a unique range of flavanoids in their original and natural combination. It is believed that the flavanoids contained in Propolis block the release of histamine by means of cell membrane lipid stabilization. This creates inner immunity against many illnesses. These same ingredients in Propolis guard against the deposition of cholesterine crystals, lipofuscins (fatty pigment in the heart muscle, nerves and liver) that could accelerate aging.

The team of doctors conducted various laboratory, physical and psychological tests to come up with their conclusions about the broad influence of this daily supplement. Their findings suggest that people can enjoy good physical and mental health with this daily supplement. Professor Scheller released these findings about Propolis and its reactions:

"There was an increase in general physical performance;
also sexual and above all, intellectual.

"In the gastro-enterological area, we found a favorable
effect on infectious changes in the mucous membranes of
the stomach and intestines.

"There was an accelerated and intensified regeneration of
injured tissue on traumatically or infectiously altered
tissues.

"There were no unequivocally negative changes in the white
blood picture or in the liver or kidney values. Among other
things, this substantiates the absence of side effects of
Propolis as well as its nontoxicity.

"In our paper, we particularly studied the effect on the
immune system and documented further positive effects of
Propolis on circulation, metabolism, physical well-being
and infectious diseases."

In conclusion, the immune system, key to protection against infection, aging and cellular destruction, has been shown to become rejuvenated through the use of the all natural food substance created in beehives called Propolis.
