Homeopathic Treatment for Colic in Horses

Colic in horses can be very serious, even fatal. Unfortunately, colic happens all too frequently and is often accompanied by expensive veterinary bills. Colic can be caused by many things, including stress, change of diet and gas caused by cribbing - to name a few. Colic is very stressful on the horse owner as well. When your horse shows signs of distress and colic it is hard not to feel panicked and helpless. The standard treatment is to walk the horse, often for hours, or to call the vet. Calling the veterinarian for colic often results in a shot of Banamine and still hours of walking - and how often does your horse show signs of colic at the end of the day or the evening when it costs quite a bit more to get a vet out.

Homeopathy and Horse Treatments

Are you aware that many horse owners are opting for homeopathic treatments for their horses? The fact is that alternative medicines such as Homeopathy are becoming more and more popular in veterinary health care. And among these alternative medical practices, Homeopathy ranks among the top. However the use of Homeopathic treatments for horses is still not that widespread in the United States, but it is being used more and more in western Europe, Australia and also in Canada. For example in Canada there are today more than 100 veterinarians who practice alternative theories including Homeopathy and belong to the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. And they have been practicing and healing the horses very successfully.

How Homeopathy Works

There is a basic difference between Homeopathy and the conventional medical practices. While contemporary practitioners try to treat the symptoms, Homeopathy works from the inside and tries to identify the real reason behind these symptoms and then tries to eradicate these factors that are causing the symptoms to appear. Homeopathy believes that healing comes from within, from the innate self-healing forces of the body and includes the mental and emotional aspects of the problem as well. Developed by Samuel Hahnemann towards the end of the 18th century, Homeopathy uses small doses of medicinal ingredients to stimulate the body's own defense and healing process. In this way the natural balance of the body is restored and dis-ease is treated.

How effective has Homeopathy been with Horses?

Treating colic in horses with Homeopathy is a new approach and there is not much data on the effects. I can tell you from personal experience that most horses that I have used this treatment on responded within 10 to 20 minutes. I have used Homeopathic colic treatment on horses who were showing extreme signs of colic, including panic, colic stance, biting at their sides, lying down, rolling on the ground then jumping up and resuming the stance. The treatment was to use 6 - 8 sprays in the mouth and leave the horse. In most cases the horse was up and eating and drinking normally within 20 minutes. The only case that did not respond was an impaction. When the horse did not respond to the Homeopathic colic treatment (repeated every 15 minutes) in 45 minutes we called out the veterinarian. This treatment is also effective in horses with gas and upset stomachs, things that often lead to colic.

Conclusion

Till only a few years back, mainstream/allopathic practitioners used to look at Homeopathy suspiciously. Now many among them are beginning to accept it and recommend it to their clients. One of the main reasons is that you cannot harm an animal using Homeopathic treatments. The very worst that could happen is that the treatment may not always work. People are finding Homeopathy a very safe and easy alternative as well.

Tip: Vaginal Warts and Homeopathy

While new drugs and treatments are usually tested first on animals, Homeopathy has been tested first on people. For example, Homeopathy has been used successfully in the treatment of certain viruses. Vaginal warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus or the HPV. The warts are benign lumps that appear on the vaginal area and are thus referred to as vaginal warts. They are highly contagious and can spread very quickly. Sadly, the virus that causes the warts can never be completely eradicated from the body. But its spread can be controlled and once the lumps appear, they can be cured quickly. And Homeopathy has been found to be very effective in doing this.
